Youtube Sensation Miranda Sings takes Theatre Royal, Brighton

On November 9th, Miranda Sings will take the stage at the Theatre Royal, Brighton in East Sussex.

Miranda Sings is an internet character created in 2008 by American comedian, actress, singer and YouTube personality Colleen Ballinger. Ballinger displays videos of the comically talentless, egotistical and quirky character on her YouTube channel under the username Miranda Sings. On these videos, the character sings poorly, discusses present events that she often misapprehends, gives "tutorials" and rants about her critics, the "haters".

Ballinger created the character as a satire of the many bad but arrogant singers who believe that posting their videos on YouTube will lead to them breaking into show business.

Genesis of the Character

Miranda's creator, Colleen Ballinger, created the character partly on young women that she knew in the performance department of her college, Azusa Pacific University. She told The Times of London, "There were a lot of cocky girls who thought they were really talented, and they weren't. They were so rude and snotty, it drove me nuts. Then I saw all these girls trying to make a career out of putting videos on YouTube (of themselves singing in their bedrooms) ... clueless to the fact that they were terrible. The characters were so ridiculous; I wanted to make one of my own." Ballinger has said: "I
thought it was so stupid, because I didn't think anybody got famous off of YouTube."
In March 2009, she uploaded a video called "Free Voice Lesson" that quickly became a sensation. The video consists of advice to use, and demonstrations of, techniques that real voice teachers would warn students to avoid.

Beyoncé is undoubtedly a goddess. Lady Gaga is an artist and a half. But after logging her eighth number-one single, Katy Perry might be the biggest pop star of her generation. She’s also the only one who has performed at The Brighton Dome.

The Brighton Dome is Royal History

The Brighton Dome is the south coast's leading multi-arts venue at the cultural heart of England's ‘city on the edge’. Brighton Dome plays host to an collection of event and conference spaces within its Grade I and II listed historic building, the former Royal Riding House of Prince Regent in 1805.

This marvellous venue is over 200 years old, which in fact started as The Prince Regents stables and riding house. This venue offers a huge space which is  perfect to highlight the arts.

A Bit Of History of The Brighton Dome

The stables were converted to a concert hall around 1860. Queen Victoria, the Prince’s niece, took a dislike to Brighton and the Royal Pavilion Estate. Instead, the town purchased the stable building in 1850 and it was used as a cavalry barracks from 1856 to 1864. Its interior was modernised by architect Philip Lockwood at a cost of £10,000 before reopening on 24 June 1867 as a concert and assembly hall, fit to hold 2,500 people. A 16-foot diameter gas powered chandelier was tailored as the grand centrepiece. Since that time, the Corn Exchange and Concert Hall have gone through many changed guises with the latest renovation of the Concert Hall taking place in 2001–02 and costing £22 million. This rebirth was assisted in with the help of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Courtney Pine, Nigel Kennedy and Fatboy Slim.

Every year, they present and produce over 600 events spanning music, theatre, dance, comedy, literature, spoken word, visual arts, film, digital and more. In addition to the year-round programme, each May they produce England's leading and most-progressive mixed-arts celebration, the internationally-acclaimed Brighton Festival. Artists have varied on the stage, such as; David Bowie, Katy Perry, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Michael Bublé etc.

A centre for artists across the region, Brighton Dome hosts and supports both developing and established artists and companies, enabling them to develop, take risks and deliver work of the highest quality.

Brighton's New Topshop - Celebrity Signing or Store Opening?

Topshop Launch in Brighton today at 10am, were you there?

Thursday the 2nd of October - brand new Topshop store. The launch marks the end of major building work at Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton.

The first lot of girls and boys queuing up for entry were seen at around 8.30am waiting to be the first 250 customers to enter the store for a free goody bag. As well as receiving complimentary coffee and smoothie testers from Starbucks and Eat, whilst they queue for over 90 minutes until the shop finally opened at 10am.

The first lot of people that got in were greeted by sales assistants, that gave you your goody bag. This is just before you step into a club like atmosphere with a fabulous showing of brand new clothes and accessories.

It comes to no shock that most of the people rushed straight to the free Brighton Rock stand, were a young girl gave you a complimentary Brighton Rock lipstick and 42 Juice drink, as long as you wrote #TOPSHOPBrightonRocks on either Instagram or Twitter. There was also a funky photo booth were friends could take photos.

It will feature Topshop and Topman’s first joint shopping space and personal shopping department outside London.

Personal shoppers will offer the free service to customers from the comfort of a private area.

And to finish it all off, Inside beauty experts offer a free makeover, beauty advice and manicures.

The store will offer their latest and exclusive new products, including sought-after collections such as Tall, Petite, Maternity, Topman Ltd and Lux.

The Ancient Art of the Locks and Locksmiths in Brighton

You may be thinking ‘only Locksmiths in Brighton will care about the history of locks’ but it would surprise you how much locks have changed over the years.

When seeing church locks it seems appropriate that the earliest representation of a lock should be found on a bas-relief in an Egyptian temple at Kamak dating from 2000BC. The Greeks are recognized with the invention of the keyhole, the point of a sickle shaped tool being inserted through a small hole in the door, and, with a slight rotary motion, closing or withdrawing a



large bolt A Linear B tablet dating to 1300BC, excavated in Crete, was translated.Keys are stated in the Old Testament, notably in Judges ch3 v25, written around 1170BC and Isaiah ch22 v22, from about 740BC. The initial lock mined came from the Palace of Sargon at Khorsabad in Iraq, dating from 700BC. As they were now made from metal a large number have survived. Padlocks with a spring tine mechanism were found at York when the Jorvik Viking settlement of 850 was discovered.

A small but useful source of data from this period through to medieval times comes from the art of the period; carvings, wall paintings, illuminated manuscripts and stained glass. Representations of everyday life occasionally show modern locks and keys and portrayals of St Peter can be an ironic source.

Church Locks in Brighton

Many altered types of locks can be found on church doors, depending on age, location and support. They might be rim locks, mortise locks or even padlocks, and be of entirely metal construction or of wood and iron. The doors of many historic churches still carry an old wooden lock, although you may find that a modem 5-lever mortise lock has been installed alongside it to meet insurance supplies.


The general name for the family of wooden locks is 'woodstock locks' a term dating back to the knowledge of trades springing from smithing, with some terms in common between the numerous branches.

Before development many Banbury locks were made by resident craftsmen, so even Locksmiths in Brighton wouldn’t have known how to use one. There are many variations to the normal deadbolt pattern, some having latch bolts in addition, operated by the key; some having double bolts and some double-handed for use in either a right-hand or left-hand application.

Locks were not used just on the main doors; there will typically be locks on bell towers, vestries and organ lofts too, often as old as the church, occasionally remaining forgotten during a modernisation.
