The Theatre
Royal, Brighton is a theatre in Brighton, England. This theatre
presents a range of West End and
touring musicals and plays, along with
performances of opera and ballet. In new years, catering to a
wider demographic, The Theatre Royal Brighton has chosen to offer an
alternative to the traditional Christmas pantomime which it historically
played, replacing the shows with big hits such as Priscilla Queen of the Desert,
The Rocky Horror Show, and Spamalot, which everyone, not just young children,
can enjoy.
History of the Theatre Royal Brighton
The Theatre
Royal, Brighton is in a stunningly historic Grade ll listed building in
Brighton’s cultural quarter. In 1806 the Prince of Wales gave Royal Assent for
the theatre to be built and it opened on 27 June 1807, with a performance of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. It battled
with mixed fortunes until the theatre was purchased in 1854 by actor Henry John
Nye Chart, who engaged theatre architect Charles J.
Phipps to begin a programme of expansion and redevelopment.
Opening its
doors in 1807, the Theatre Royal has over 200 years of performances to its
name, making it one of the most prestigious venues outside of London. The
theatre’s 200th birthday was celebrated with a year of festivities and superior
events including a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, who even named a box after
herself. Located in one of the city’s most characteristic areas, the Theatre Royal
is the best place to visit on a day out to the coast. There are numerous admired
restaurants and cafes within walking distance, so theatregoers can enjoy a
drink or a bite to eat before or after a performance.
