Themed Vs Traditional Pubs: How Traditional Pubs are Striking Back

A study of drinking ways has found that bars decorated with street signs and other flavourings from "theme" nations have lost their originality value and are being increasingly seen as tacky.

A team from the market research company Mintel found that 100 theme bars - which became popular in the mid-1990s and include chains such as Scruffy Murphy's, Bar Oz, Finnegan's Wake and O'Neill's had closed or converted back to traditional British Brighton pubs in the past year.

 

Pat Aston, the senior leisure analyst at Mintel, said to The Telegraph: "The big boom in

theme bars is over. They have lost their novelty value. More women are going to bars and there is a new trend towards minimalism or post-modern eclecticism, neither of which fits well with theming."

The findings show that the influence of Britain's ageing population has also been felt on the theme bars, which were designed to appeal to 20- to 24-year-olds - a group that will decrease in size over the next decade.

The landlord, Raymond Williams, 55, praised his "nice old pub", which had a history dating back to the 16th century. He said: "I still serve people who have fond memories of it back in the early '90s. Many have told me they are very happy that the themed Irish bar has been banished."

One King and Keys customer, Andrew Lester, 22, a tax consultant, said: "I prefer it like this. It's a nicer pub."

Youtube Sensation Miranda Sings takes Theatre Royal, Brighton

On November 9th, Miranda Sings will take the stage at the Theatre Royal, Brighton in East Sussex.

Miranda Sings is an internet character created in 2008 by American comedian, actress, singer and YouTube personality Colleen Ballinger. Ballinger displays videos of the comically talentless, egotistical and quirky character on her YouTube channel under the username Miranda Sings. On these videos, the character sings poorly, discusses present events that she often misapprehends, gives "tutorials" and rants about her critics, the "haters".

Ballinger created the character as a satire of the many bad but arrogant singers who believe that posting their videos on YouTube will lead to them breaking into show business.

Genesis of the Character

Miranda's creator, Colleen Ballinger, created the character partly on young women that she knew in the performance department of her college, Azusa Pacific University. She told The Times of London, "There were a lot of cocky girls who thought they were really talented, and they weren't. They were so rude and snotty, it drove me nuts. Then I saw all these girls trying to make a career out of putting videos on YouTube (of themselves singing in their bedrooms) ... clueless to the fact that they were terrible. The characters were so ridiculous; I wanted to make one of my own." Ballinger has said: "I
thought it was so stupid, because I didn't think anybody got famous off of YouTube."
In March 2009, she uploaded a video called "Free Voice Lesson" that quickly became a sensation. The video consists of advice to use, and demonstrations of, techniques that real voice teachers would warn students to avoid.
